Duane Hipchen Memorial Shoot at Mt Jewett Sportsmen’s Club

The Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club is once again hosting its annual Duane Hipchen Memorial Sporting Clays Shoot on Sunday, October 21, starting at 9:00 a.m. and running until 2:00 p.m.  No pre-registration is required.  Bring your hunting shotgun and have some fun!  Proceeds from the event support the Youth Fund of the Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club.

Trophies will be awarded in both Adult and Junior shooters’ classes.  Some of the stations have three targets so it is recommended that you bring a pump shotgun or a semi-automatic shotgun, but all shotguns of your preference are allowed.  You do NOT have to bring a pump or semi-automatic shotgun.  Shells in 20 and 12 gauges will be available for sale from the club.

Questions may be addressed to the Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club at mjsportsmensclub@outlook.com.

Duane Hipchen was a well-known and respected employee of the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) and was active in the Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club for decades.  Duane served as a Deputy Game Protector from the 1950’s until the 1980’s.  He worked as a laborer and then the foreman on the PGC Food and Cover Corps for over thirty years, maintaining and improving game habitat throughout McKean County.  Duanee was a hunter and trapper education instructor for many years.  Duane also operated a small sporting goods shop in Hazel Hurst for years – a place where local kids could walk to, and get bait or other trapping, hunting or fishing gear.  Duane was particularly interested in helping youth with their involvement in the outdoors.

A fee will be charged for each round of sporting clays.

Mt Jewett Sportsmen’s Club to Host Rattlesnake Seminar

Fred Tarnaski, rattlesnake enthusiast and owner of live rattlesnakes, will present an educational seminar FREE to the public on the “Myths, Legends, Lore, and Truths about Rattlesnakes” at the Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club on Wednesday, 9/12, starting at 6:00 p.m. at the clubhouse.

The Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club is located one and one-half miles down Division Street in Mt. Jewett, McKean County. Mt. Jewett is three miles east of the junction of US 219 and US 6 at Lantz’s Corners.

Fred will bring several rattlesnakes with him for the presentation and will share the life history of these shy, elusive creatures, and answer questions the public may have about rattlesnakes. Fred will also share the Do’s and Don’ts of what to do when encountering a rattlesnake around human habitation or in the woods.

Forty years ago, the timber rattlesnake was spiraling towards extinction because of wanton killing and loss of denning habitat. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission conducted research, protected key habitats, and initiated a public campaign to educate people about the ways of rattlesnakes. The rattlesnake was recently moved off the threatened list in Pennsylvania, but is still a species of interest. Come learn how to help protect these unique critters of the Pennsylvania Wilds.

Women’s Introduction to Wingshooting at Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club

Bradford Era — In the 1990s, the number of female hunters nearly doubled to about 11 percent of the nation’s hunters, and this trend is likely to continue thanks in part to in-depth hunter education courses, such as the Ruffed Grouse Society’s “Women’s Introduction to Wingshooting,” a program for women taught by women.

The Allegheny Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society, which covers, McKean, Elk, Cameron, Potter counties and part of Jefferson County, is bringing “Women’s Introduction to Wingshooting” to McKean County on July 21-22 and August 25-26 at the Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club. An actual hunt on September 9 concludes the program.

Enrollment for the classes is capped at 20 women. There are still ten spots open. July 16 is the deadline for registering. Read More

MJ2KB Trail Club Shifts Focus to Trail Maintenance

Bradford Era — A group that had been fighting to save rails along the Knox-Kane Corridor has a new focus: maintenance of the railless trail. In 2015, Mount Jewett to Kinzua Bridge (MJ2KB) Trail Club advocated to save rails that were slated for removal on a rails-to-trails project between Mount Jewett and Kinzua Bridge State Park.

At that time, the club had proposed installing light rail maintenance cars and building a pedestrian trail next to the tracks. It aimed to purchase the corridor and rails, but it was unable to come up with $430,000 to purchase the 3.9-mile section of corridor. Headwaters Charitable Trust purchased the land, and a previous plan to create a railless trail was put into motion. The rails are gone and a trail is under construction. Read More
