Fred Tarnaski, rattlesnake enthusiast and owner of live rattlesnakes, will present an educational seminar FREE to the public on the “Myths, Legends, Lore, and Truths about Rattlesnakes” at the Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club on Wednesday, 9/12, starting at 6:00 p.m. at the clubhouse.

The Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club is located one and one-half miles down Division Street in Mt. Jewett, McKean County. Mt. Jewett is three miles east of the junction of US 219 and US 6 at Lantz’s Corners.

Fred will bring several rattlesnakes with him for the presentation and will share the life history of these shy, elusive creatures, and answer questions the public may have about rattlesnakes. Fred will also share the Do’s and Don’ts of what to do when encountering a rattlesnake around human habitation or in the woods.

Forty years ago, the timber rattlesnake was spiraling towards extinction because of wanton killing and loss of denning habitat. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission conducted research, protected key habitats, and initiated a public campaign to educate people about the ways of rattlesnakes. The rattlesnake was recently moved off the threatened list in Pennsylvania, but is still a species of interest. Come learn how to help protect these unique critters of the Pennsylvania Wilds.

The Mt. Jewett Sportsmen’s Club is a progressive sportsmen’s club that features clay target shooting, a rifle and pistol range, a Women’s Intro to Wingshooting Program, youth pheasant hunts, a Hunter Education program, Boy Scout events, THE Big Buck contest, and sharing of conservation knowledge.
